First sip

This week had two very different tracks with one shared lesson. On the real-world side, the Minnesota daycare fraud story was a reminder that when systems pay for volume and audits lag, bad outcomes scale fast. On the crypto side, incentives show up as points programs, leverage products, and distribution battles that pull attention and liquidity. The point is not to equate the stakes or the ethics, it is to notice what the system is paying people to do. If you can name the incentive loop, you can usually predict the behavior that follows

This week on Coffee with Captain

  • Read the incentive loop first: Whether it is policy, platforms, or markets, the scoreboard shapes behavior faster than opinions do (Mon–Fri)

  • Misaligned incentives create predictable failures: If a system rewards throughput and scrutiny is slow, the edge gets exploited until rules change (Mon)

  • Narratives move money before receipts arrive: Treat rumor spikes like liquidity events, not conviction signals, because reversals are usually faster than the build (Mon)

  • Points and perps are shaping the trader meta: Platforms compete on incentives and UX, and that competition is driving real user flow and attention (Tue, Fri)

  • Tokenized stocks and wallets are distribution wars: The winner is whoever owns onboarding, discovery, and repeat usage at scale (Tue, Thu)

  • Creator economies show what mainstream looks like: Reliable payouts plus simple onboarding beat ideology and token-first design (Wed)

  • ETH leading is a risk-on tell: When ETH gets the bid early, risk appetite often widens and alt narratives get easier to fund (Fri)
